Advice before dental surgery

Prepare for the post-operative period by arranging time to rest, wholesome food, your medication and any dietary supplements.

Collect your medication and/or dietary supplements from a pharmacy and follow the instructions on your prescription.

Choose lukewarm foods that are easy to eat.

If we advise you to do so, obtain freezer bags and bags of ice cubes to make ice packs.

Preparing on the day of dental surgery

Have a substantial breakfast to avoid low blood sugar, or eat a normal lunch, and continue taking your medication as instructed on the prescription. You must not arrive on an empty stomach.

If the dental surgeon prescribed medication at your initial consultation, follow the instructions on the prescription.

Make sure you brush your teeth, gums and tongue thoroughly before dental surgery.

Please arrive 10 to 15 minutes before your appointment so that you can complete the administrative paperwork with our reception team.

Stopping smoking and alcohol before dental surgery

You must stop smoking at least 7 days before the procedure. Please note that seven days is the absolute minimum. In some cases, you will need to stop smoking and drinking alcohol several months before the procedure.

  • Eat lukewarm, soft or cold food.
  • Avoid chewing on the treated area and do not spit.
  • When brushing your teeth, avoid the surgical site for 48 hours.
After 48 hours, use a post-surgical toothbrush and brush the area very gently. Do not scrub it. After 2 weeks, you can return to brushing normally with your usual toothbrush.
  • For mouthwash: start using it 48 hours after the procedure. Do not gargle. Instead, tilt your head from side to side to move the liquid around your mouth.
After 30 seconds, lean over the sink and allow the liquid to drain out without spitting.
  • Take your medication exactly as instructed on the prescription.

Rest and precautions after dental surgery

Avoid alcohol and tobacco for 2 weeks after the procedure.

If you exercise regularly, avoid any activity that raises your heart rate during the first 3 days after the procedure.
