When your teeth reveal more than you might think

You wake up with a painful jaw. You experience tension in your neck, recurring headaches, or your teeth seem to be wearing down faster than usual. These signs, often dismissed or attributed to stress, may stem from an imbalance in your dental occlusion. Identifying and correcting such imbalances is precisely the purpose of occlusodontics.
Occlusodontics

What exactly is occlusodontics?

Occlusodontics is the branch of dentistry that studies how your upper and lower teeth meet when you close your mouth, in other words, your dental occlusion. But it goes far beyond this simple contact: it also examines the function of the chewing muscles and temporomandibular joints (TMJs), as well as the overall balance of your masticatory system.

When everything is properly aligned, you do not notice it. When there is an imbalance, however slight, the whole body often pays the price.

The difference between dental occlusion and malocclusion

A dental malocclusion simply means that your teeth do not fit together as they should. This may be due to their angle, position or height, or to the relationship between the two jaws. A malocclusion can remain unnoticed for a long time, but if left untreated it may eventually cause a series of symptoms that you would not instinctively associate with your teeth.

How can you recognise an occlusal disorder?

The signs of occlusal dysfunction are often subtle at first. They may gradually intensify over weeks or years and can ultimately become genuinely disabling in everyday life.

The following symptoms should prompt you to arrange an occlusal assessment:

  • Jaw pain or tension, particularly on waking
  • Frequent headaches, especially around the temples
  • Clicking, popping or locking of the TMJs (temporomandibular joints)
  • Bruxism (grinding or clenching the teeth, often at night)
  • Pain in the neck, shoulders or back
  • A sensation of blocked ears or tinnitus
  • Abnormal or uneven tooth wear
  • Unexplained tooth sensitivity

It is important to note that these symptoms may have other causes. Only a thorough oral examination can provide a reliable diagnosis.

What happens during an occlusal assessment at Cabinet Dentaire de la Madeleine

Nothing is rushed. Before considering any treatment, we take the time to listen, examine and understand.

1

Your first appointment: listening and observation

During this initial consultation, we review your full medical and dental history. You tell us about your discomfort, how often it occurs and how it has developed. We then carry out a complete oral examination: assessing dental contacts, jaw mobility, the condition of the temporomandibular joints and the chewing muscles.

In some cases, impressions or digital scans of your jaws are taken to complete this initial assessment.

2

Diagnosis: taking a comprehensive view

Following the occlusal assessment, we establish a precise diagnosis. This considers all the factors identified: the relationship between your dental arches, muscular and joint function, and any signs of wear or tension. The diagnosis then guides us towards the treatment best suited to your circumstances.

Occlusodontic treatments: which solutions for which problems?

There is no universal treatment. Every patient is different and every diagnosis is unique.

Your treatment plan is therefore always personalised.

Occlusodontic treatment
Occlusodontic treatment

This is the standard therapeutic device used in occlusodontics. Made from a precise impression of your dental arches, an occlusal splint is a resin appliance fitted to your mouth and generally worn at night.

It serves several purposes: it protects the enamel from wear caused by bruxism, relaxes the chewing muscles, relieves the temporomandibular joints and allows the jaw to return to a natural resting position. It does not cure the underlying cause of bruxism, but it considerably limits its effects and effectively relieves the associated pain.

Occlusodontic treatment

When certain dental contacts are identified as a source of imbalance, an occlusal adjustment may be performed. This involves precise, minute adjustments designed to harmonise contact between the two arches during different jaw movements. When carefully performed, this type of procedure can have a significant effect on chronic pain that a patient may have experienced for years.

Occlusodontic treatment

In complex cases, occlusodontics forms part of a broader care plan. We work closely with physiotherapists, osteopaths and orthodontists to provide a consistent, long-term solution. Some disorders do indeed require several factors to be addressed simultaneously.

Bruxism: when stress emerges at night

Bruxism affects a significant proportion of adults, often without them being fully aware of it. This involuntary grinding or clenching of the teeth, which most commonly occurs at night, is closely linked to stress, fatigue or an underlying occlusal imbalance.

Over time, it can cause severe enamel wear, fractured teeth, muscle and joint pain, as well as sleep disorders. An early diagnosis allows treatment to begin before the effects become lasting.

If you think you may have bruxism, or if someone close to you has mentioned it, do not wait for your teeth to sound the alarm in their own way.
