Dental bone grafting

Restore a strong, functional jaw

With a treatment plan tailored to you, we create the best possible conditions to restore your smile for the long term and ensure the stability of your future dental treatment.

Dental bone grafting

Restore a strong jaw while maintaining a natural smile with a bone graft

A dental bone graft is a pre-implant surgical procedure that adds bone to the jaw in preparation for dental implants. It restores strength and function to the jaw while maintaining a natural appearance.

The success of an implant depends on the quantity and quality of the bone in contact with it. Where bone defects are present, bone augmentation and regeneration treatments are required to enable an implant to be placed under the right conditions.

Depending on the bone defect and the anatomy of the area, several regenerative treatments may be considered. We will recommend the option with the highest success rate in clinical studies.
For complex bone grafting procedures, we work with dentists who have received specialist surgical training: French Society of Oral Surgery

Why have a bone graft?

A bone graft is needed when the jawbone is too thin or fragile to support dental implants. It creates a strong foundation for future implants and helps prevent long-term complications.

The procedure also helps preserve the balance of the jaw and improve the likelihood of successful implant treatment. Following a full oral and radiographic assessment, your dentist will determine the technique best suited to your needs, with the aim of achieving a stable, lasting result that fits seamlessly into your treatment plan.

All-on-4 and All-on-6: an alternative to bone grafting

In some cases, rather than performing a bone graft to compensate for significant bone loss, it may be possible to choose an All-on-4 or All-on-6 solution. These techniques involve placing four or six dental implants respectively, angled strategically to maximise anchorage in the existing bone. This allows a complete fixed prosthesis to be supported without additional bone grafting.

This approach is particularly suitable for patients with significant bone resorption who wish to avoid grafting and would like a faster way to restore a functional, natural-looking set of teeth. Its benefits include a quicker recovery and fewer surgical procedures.

What happens during a dental bone graft?

Dental bone grafting takes place in several stages. First, Dr Joseph Nammour carries out a consultation to determine the technique best suited to your needs.

The pre-implant surgery is then performed using bone taken from another part of your body or a bone substitute material. Once the area has healed, the dental implants can be placed.

The different types of bone graft surgery

Sinus augmentation or sinus lift
Sinus augmentation or sinus lift

A sinus lift, also known as sinus floor elevation or sinus augmentation, may be useful before a dental implant is placed to help ensure the strength and function of the jaw and teeth. When there is insufficient bone height in the posterior upper jaw, bone material can be added in the sinus area to enable implants to be placed.

Horizontal bone augmentation

Horizontal bone augmentation widens the bony ridge. It addresses insufficient bone width caused by bone loss following a tooth extraction.

Vertical bone augmentation

Successful implant treatment requires sufficient alveolar ridge height. Vertical augmentation addresses insufficient bone height resulting from substantial bone remodelling.

Socket preservation

Preserving the bone of the ridge plays an essential role in healthy gum healing if you wish to replace a missing tooth with an implant. These regenerative treatments are used after certain tooth extractions to maintain enough bone volume for implant placement.

Guided bone regeneration GBR

When there is not enough bone, it may be necessary to rebuild the bone volume so that an implant can be secured in place. This surgical technique uses biomaterials and membranes to guide bone regeneration.

Dental bone grafting FAQs

What is a dental bone graft?

A dental bone graft is a surgical procedure that increases the amount of bone in an area of the jaw where one or more teeth are missing. It is often needed before a dental implant is placed to help ensure its stability and longevity.

What types of dental bone graft are available?

There are several types of dental bone graft, including autografts, which use the patient's own bone; allografts, which use human donor bone; xenografts, which use bone from another species, often bovine; and alloplastic grafts, which use synthetic materials.

Is a dental bone graft painful?

Dental bone grafting is performed under anaesthesia, so you should not feel pain during the procedure. You may experience mild pain or discomfort afterwards, but this can usually be managed with pain relief prescribed by your dental surgeon.

How much does a dental bone graft cost?

The cost of a dental bone graft depends on several factors, including the type of graft, the complexity of the procedure and the patient's insurance cover. It is best to discuss these details with your dental surgeon for an accurate estimate.
