What is a ceramic dental veneer?

A ceramic dental veneer is a bonded prosthetic restoration. It is a thin shell of ceramic, generally between 0.3 and 0.7 millimetres thick. It covers only the front surface and incisal edge of the anterior teeth.

Unlike a dental crown, which involves preparing the tooth all the way around and often root canal treatment, a veneer follows the principles of minimally invasive dentistry. Preparation is limited to the outer surface of the tooth, preserving pulp vitality and almost all of the dentine.

Although composite veneers are available, we favour ceramic for definitive cosmetic restorations. It is an inert, vitrified and durable material.

At Cabinet Dentaire de la Madeleine in Paris, we work with several leading types of ceramic recognised for their performance and clinical reliability, including:

  • Feldspathic ceramic: This is built up by hand in layers on a refractory die. Its optical properties most closely resemble those of natural enamel, particularly in terms of fluorescence and opalescence. It is indicated for purely cosmetic cases involving teeth with little discolouration.
  • Lithium disilicate ceramic (such as Emax): This is produced by pressing or CAD/CAM milling. It has high flexural strength of more than 400 MPa. It is indicated where occlusal forces are significant or where a discoloured, heavily stained tooth needs to be masked.

The team at Cabinet Dentaire de la Madeleine is committed to welcoming patients in the best possible conditions and providing care that meets the most exacting standards.

Ceramic dental veneers made in France

The quality of the marginal fit, where the tooth and veneer meet, and the cosmetic result depend on the ceramicist's work. Our restorations are made by partner laboratories in France, primarily in Paris. This ensures that the materials used comply with European standards and carry CE marking, while allowing the shade to be precisely customised.

Ceramic dental veneers: Treatments and requirements

Ceramic veneer treatment can change the colour, shape and, to some extent, the position of the teeth at the same time. It is a suitable option when non-invasive treatments, such as whitening or microabrasion, or orthodontics alone cannot achieve the desired functional and cosmetic goals.

However, veneers are never fitted as a matter of course. A healthy oral environment is essential to ensure a stable, long-lasting result.

Some dental discolouration is intrinsic, meaning that it lies within the dentine, and does not respond to chemical whitening agents. Veneers may be indicated to treat:

  • Discolouration caused by medication;
  • Root-filled teeth;
  • Dental fluorosis;
  • And other conditions.

Correcting tooth shape with dental veneers

Genetic or functional factors can affect the integrity of the dental crown. Veneers can be used to:

  • Restore lost volume;
  • Reconstruct the tooth's anatomy;
  • Correct size abnormalities;
  • Address other morphological concerns.

Correcting mild misalignment with veneers

In some occlusal situations, veneers offer a prosthetic alternative to orthodontics to:

  • Close diastemas by filling gaps between teeth.
  • Correct teeth that are slightly set back or rotated.

Consultation before ceramic dental veneers

During your initial consultation with a dentist at Cabinet Dentaire de la Madeleine in Paris, the clinician assesses the risks and may advise against treatment in situations such as:

  • Uncontrolled bruxism;
  • Insufficient enamel;
  • Periodontal disease;
  • Unfavourable occlusion.

Our process for fitting ceramic dental veneers

Veneer treatment at Cabinet Dentaire de la Madeleine follows a precise, sequential protocol. This standardised process allows each stage of the procedure to be approved in turn.

1

Stage 1: Diagnosis and Digital Smile Design

The first appointment includes an oral and radiographic examination to assess the health of the teeth and gums. Photographs and digital impressions are used to create a 3D simulation of the proposed result, incorporating the patient's facial features.

2

Stage 2: The mock-up

The laboratory produces a model of the proposed result. This is transferred to the mouth using temporary resin to create the mock-up. It allows the patient to see the prospective result in situ. The clinician assesses its cosmetic integration, speech and occlusion. The proposed result is approved or adjusted at this stage.

3

Stage 3: Tooth preparation and impressions

Once the proposed result has been approved, the clinician prepares the teeth, usually under local anaesthetic. This stage involves selectively polishing the enamel. Precision impressions are sent to the laboratory. Temporary veneers protect the teeth during the manufacturing phase.

4

Stage 4: Adhesive bonding

The definitive veneers are tried in to check their marginal fit and shade. Once approved, they are bonded under rubber dam isolation using a specific composite resin, creating a permanent bond between the ceramic and the tooth.
