At-home teeth whitening: how does it work?

Welcome to this article about teeth whitening at home. This increasingly popular brightening treatment can help you achieve whiter teeth without having to visit the dentist for every session. We will explain how an at-home whitening kit works. This DIY teeth-whitening method uses specific products such as hydrogen peroxide and bicarbonate of soda. You will also learn about the importance of oral hygiene and tooth enamel during the whitening process. In particular, we will discuss the safety of these at-home teeth-brightening techniques. Read on to find out everything you need to know about this fascinating subject.

What does the at-home teeth-whitening kit contain?

Our take-home whitening kit contains:

  • an information sheet with useful advice, which you can find here;
  • whitening products;
  • whitening trays.

The steps involved in teeth whitening at home

Dental stains vary in colour:

1

Step 1 – Prepare your teeth

In the evening before going to bed, brush your teeth thoroughly. For optimal oral hygiene, floss as well.

2

Step 2 – Apply the whitening gel

Place a thin line of gel inside the tray, along the section that fits over the visible surface of your teeth.

3

Step 3 – Fit the tray

Place the tray over your teeth, making sure it is correctly positioned. If necessary, remove any excess gel with a cotton bud.

4

Step 4 – Follow the recommended wear time

Wear the tray twice a day for 2 to 3 hours, or ideally overnight, for 20 to 25 days depending on the result you wish to achieve.

5

Step 5 – Remove the tray and brush your teeth

The following morning, remove the tray, then brush your teeth with a damp toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste.

6

Step 6 – Clean and store the tray

After each use, rinse the tray in cold water, dry it thoroughly, then store it in its ventilated protective case.

Our advice during your at-home treatment

  • Pause the treatment for one night if you experience excessive sensitivity. If the discomfort persists, use a desensitising toothpaste, such as Sensodyne Rapid Relief, placing it in the tray instead of the whitening product for 10 minutes, or for 1 hour if the discomfort is more severe.
  • If you experience significant discomfort or sensitivity, contact the dental practice team.
  • Avoid or limit tea, coffee, nicotine, red berries, red wine and other highly pigmented products. If you cannot avoid certain foods or drinks, wait at least 2 hours after removing the tray before consuming them.
  • Once your whitening treatment is complete, we recommend brushing your teeth with a fluoride-rich toothpaste, such as Fluocaril Bi-Fluoré, to support effective remineralisation. If you have any syringes left, preferably store them in the refrigerator.

If you feel that the result is not yet satisfactory, contact Cabinet Dentaire de la Madeleine for another brief assessment.

About teeth whitening at home

Does at-home teeth whitening really take place at home?

Yes. Apart from the initial consultation to determine your desired shade, the entire at-home teeth-whitening treatment is carried out in your own home.

Is take-home teeth whitening safe?

When used correctly, the at-home teeth-whitening kit supplied by Cabinet Dentaire de la Madeleine is safe once we have confirmed that it is suitable for you. During your initial consultation at the practice, we will assess your tooth sensitivity and the health of your enamel so that we can recommend the most appropriate whitening solution.

Can the teeth-whitening process be extended?

Of course. If you are not satisfied with the result after 3 or 4 weeks, you can extend the treatment after an assessment by our dental professionals.

What time of day should the whitening trays be fitted?

The best option is to whiten your teeth overnight. If this is uncomfortable, however, you can wear the trays during the day for 2 to 3 hours, on 3 occasions.

What should I do if patches appear on my teeth during whitening?

Do not worry. It is normal for white patches to appear; they will gradually fade over the course of the treatment.
